Hello and welcome

My name is Conor and I am a software developer at Rightpoint Commerce currently developing Magento and Shopify applications. After trying my hand at other subjects I decided studying Computer Science was right for me upon my arrival at Stony Brook. What lead me towards this decision was the first programming course I took at Nassau Community College where I found the course work to not only be interesting but also enjoyable. Although admittedly I have a biased towards Java as it was my first language thus making it my first friend in the CS world I have also enjoyed learning PHP, python, C, C#, javaScript, html, and mySQL throughout my academic career. Aside from programming languages I have also had fun studying the foreign language of Japanese in college. Currently in my free time I am teaching myself how to develop mobile apps for Android phones. Feel free to contact me anytime at my email: conor.beck6@gmail.com

Projects

Java and Database Programming:

Ecommerce Website

Group project where a simple ecommerce website was made. I programmed the backend, database, and html. A group member applied some simple styling to the html.

Big Data Programming:

Stock Market Prediction
Manipulated and parsed a big data set using the NumPy and Pandas libraries in Python. I then utilized the data to perform predictions using the Sci-kit Learn library to predict future stock market data trends. I then graphed the data for easy analytics using the MatPlotLib library.

C Programming:

Linux Terminal Shell
A terminal shell I wrote in C with behaviors similar to Linux's bash terminal, features redirection functionality and can run and stop programs.
Text Encoding Formatter
A C program that can change text encoding between utf-8, utf-16be, and utf-16le.
Cached Concurrent Server
Multithreaded server written in C that uses a hash map for its underlying data structure for caching data.

Python Programming:

Image detection: Canny Edge Detector
Implemented my own Canny Image Edge Detector in python.
Python Server and Client/Socket Programming
A simple server and client I wrote using socket programming, data is transferred via a Pickle object.

Additional Info About Me

In the summer of 2015 I took part in Stony Brook University's study abroad program where I studied Japanese at Nihon University and lived with a Japanese host family. This trip despite my expectations was not memorable because it was my first time outside of the United States but because of the friends I made from both Nihon University and Stony Brook. The experiences and bonds formed with my host family and the Nihon University students have a special type of value that no simple sight seeing excursion or souvenir can reach. And unlike a souvenir the memories I made can always be carried with me and will not deteriorate over time. It is in fact the kindness and open arm welcome shown by the Nihon University students that inspired me to become an English tutor for the foreign students at Stony Brook. I wish to show them the kindness and guidance showed to me when I was abroad so that they may form their own invaluable memories.

Aside from studying Japanese and tutoring English I am also a member of the Stony Brook Computing Society. More recently I have also became involved with Stony Brook's kendo/kumdo team. When I'm not at Stony Brook if weather permits I can be found sailing with my father on his Tartan 37. Despite her modest size she has served us well as we have taken several overnight journeys around the northeast on her. If you'd like a look at her she can be seen at the top of the page.
